Billy Ray Harris was once homeless until the kindness of strangers helped to raise over $100,000 in funds to get Billy Ray Harris back on his feet. Earlier this year Sarah Darling, a Missouri woman went to drop a few dollars into Harris' change cup. Without realizing it, Darling's $4,000 engagement ring slipped off of her finger and into Harris' cup. For over a decade Harris was estranged from his Texas family and begging for change on the street. His story first went public in February and since then people have been donating money to help Mr. Harris.
Sarah Darling's Husband Bill Krejci was more than thankful to Billy Ray Harris. The homeless man had the ring for a few days, but did not sell it. Harris had thought about selling the ring but in the end could not go through with it. The 55-year-old homeless man was hopeful the owner of the ring would return for the expensive piece of jewelry. "I am not trying to say that I am no saint, but I am no devil either," Harris said when his story became known six months ago.
After Harris' good deed, Sarah and Bill decided to set up a foundation to help Billy Ray Harris. His act of kindness inspired not only Darling and Krejci but also over 7,000 people who have donated money to Harris' cause. Darling and Krejci started a Give Forward page in the hope of raising $1,000. The current total is $191,745. Now Billy Ray Harris has bought himself a car, a house and has a part-time job. When the story first broke six months ago Harris was invited onto the 'Today Show' where he was reunited with his estranged family.
