Spring is here, and there is no better way to celebrate that with a sweet, refreshing scoop of ice cream ... particularly if it is free.

Ben & Jerry's agrees with that, and on April 9 will be giving out free cones to faithful fans who approach their stores -- the 35th "Free Cone Day" has arrived. Between noon and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Ben & Jerry's locations will be welcoming customers with open arms and free scoops.

Free Cone Day marks the beginning of the warm season, and given how much spring's been delayed this year, people received the first sunny day of the year with elated enthusiasm. Ben & Jerry's website crashed early Tuesday morning as ice cream fans flooded the site, looking for the nearest location to get their Chunky Monkey fix in any of their 650 stores in over 20 countries.

"It's free, it's fair, it's everywhere," said chief marketing officer Dave Stever.

The company has been given away free scoops since 1979, when they started the tradition to thank customers. Since then, they have been giving out a million free scoops every year.

Do you want to take part? Then head to the nearest Ben & Jerry's store for your ice cream gratitude! You can trust the store on 151 West 34th in New York, the 174 Newbury St in Boston or the 1100 Pennsyvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. For any other stores, visit Ben & Jerry's official website.
