June 17th will give the world their first glimpse at the “golden generation” of Belgium as they are set to face an underrated Algerian side at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The teams are set to open an underrated and tough Group H, which will include the likes of Russia and South Korea. Despite the numerous amounts of expectation hovering around this Belgian side, Algeria will offer a staunch test to start up Group H play.
Though Algeria may not possess the names most people are used to seeing on a World Cup squad, they are very composed and well organized. The key to Algeria’s success will come in the form of Sofiane Feghouli, who has impressed many during his play for Valencia in La Liga. The 24-year old winger has everything that one looks for in a winger; pace, passing ability and sublime skill on the ball. Coach Vahid Halilhodzic has put his faith in the Parisian born youngster, and has said that the team will go as far as Feghouli will take them.
The key for the Algerian defense will lie in the hands of Madjid Bougherra, a mainstay in the Algerian side for over ten years. His breakout performance came in 2010 when he was able to keep Wayne Rooney from scoring to help Algeria to a 0-0 tie with England. He will once again need to be at the top of his game in order to stop the offensive onslaught that Belgium possesses.
"Les Diables Rouge" come into the tournament with a lot of expectations. Belgium coach Marc Wilmots will have a multitude of world-class players at his disposal at almost every position as they are strong from front to back. They have one of the best keepers and central defenders in all of world football, in the forms of Thibaut Cortois and Vincent Kompany. They bolster one of the best midfields in the tournament, with Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Marouane Fellaini. And not to mention they have Romelu Lukaku, who had one of the best seasons of his young career at Everton.
There is no doubt that Belgium has a squad packed with talent. But it will be no easy walk in the park for them as Algeria stays very composed and organized. The game kicks off at 12PM EST and can be seen on ESPN and Univision. For those who are not able to get to a TV, go to WatchESPN here and here for a live stream in Spanish. I hope you enjoy watching the young guns of Belgium come against a very underrated Algerian side!
