The job of a referee may hardly matter to most although they are the recipient of foul language and bashing at times. It comes with their work although there will be some instances where players and even spectators got a bit extreme.
That appears to be the case at the Love Of The Game event held at the Stronghold Christian Church on Sunday.
Captured on video, the incident started when two young bystanders approached a game official for yet to be known reasons.
Whatever the reason was behind the altercation, the referee was the recipient of kicks and punches in the face by the young students. Things went from bad to worse when the game official tried to fight back, leading to a brawl.
After the incident, Stronghold Christian Church pastor Benjamin Gaither released an official statement concerning the matter.
“It is truly unfortunate about the turn of events that took place during the basketball game held at our facility this weekend. We open our doors to serve our community and our goal is to provide an atmosphere conducive for enjoyment, enrichment, etc. While we cannot control people, it is our hope and prayer that those who enter our facility will conduct themselves in the best manner. Our prayers go out to all those involved in this current situation,” Gaither stated.
The game official required 30 stitches to stop the bleeding and is reportedly doing better now.
Kenneth Tarver, the founder of KB Sports and the person who organized the event in Lithonia, has banned the team involved in the brawl. He also vowed to beef up security for future events, TMZ reported.
"I'm gonna make it safer for the officials," Tarver said.
The incident is being investigated by the Dekalb County Police Department. Also, a spokesperson from the Stronghold Christian Church hopes that other competitors in the future will behave in a more appropriate and best manner.
