While there’s no right or wrong way to be a parent, there is a superior way to care for your baby’s skin. During a single bath, a baby’s skin can lose moisture up to five times faster than an adult’s, making it vulnerable to dryness.

Pediatrician Dr. Tanya Altmann, explains how Baby Dove goes beyond mildness to replenish essential moisture and nutrients in baby’s skin, and how parents can deal with temporary skin condition like baby acne, plus dos and don'ts.

“Baby skin is very different that adult skin,” clarifies Dr. Altmann, “It’s much more sensitive, they haven’t develop their lipids, and it’s easier to breakdown their skin barrier.” The expert recommends parents to always use a mild cleanser with their babies in order to hydrate their skin and apply lotion to lock the moisture in.

“Choose products specifically designed for the unique needs of the baby,” suggests the pediatrician. “Like the Baby Dove Rich Moisture and Sensitive Moisture.” Dr. Altmann told Latin Times that parents should always make sure to have everything at their reach before they bath their babies. “Have your towel, your baby wash and lotion ready, because you can’t take the hands off your baby. When you are done washing from tip to toe, rinse off and then wrap the baby really quickly, and then move on to the changing table.” She also suggests spending a couple minutes putting lotion on.

In case you want to restore your baby skin or the infant is presenting eczema or excessive dry skin, a good option is to use the Sensitive Moisture range to gently moisturize, and soothes the dry area. It is fragrance free for sensitive skin and the range is hypoallergenic with pH neutral, tear-free cleansers.

Dr. Altmann also mentioned a very common skin condition, the baby acne. The tiny red or white bumps that appear on the baby’s cheeks, nose, and forehead often develop within two to four weeks after birth. “It doesn’t mean your baby is going to end up with acne as a teenager, it has to do with the changing hormone levels,” explains the Dove pediatrician. “Babies are inside mom for nine months so they are exposed to the hormones, when they come out the hormone levels drop.”

“I recommend washing the face every day if it’s severe, or use the Dove baby wipes,” saiys Dr. Tanya. She also added that even though wipes are for the diaper area, the alcohol-free baby wipes, instantly moisturizing and as gentle as water.

Find below Dr. Tanya’s Dos and Don’ts to keep in mind for baby skin:

  • Don’t use your adult cleanser (shower gel) on your baby
  • Do choose a cleanser specifically made for a baby sensitive skin
  • Don’t worry if you don’t have time to bath the baby every night, a few times a week it’s enough.
  • Do have some mild wipes, gentle enough to use in hands and face as often as you need.
  • Don’t over bundle your baby during winter. Even if it’s cold outside you don’t want to overheat them inside.
  • Do dress them in layers inside the house.
