In a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of unsecured firearms, an 11-month-old baby was accidently shot and killed Monday by his older sibling after discovering a loaded rifle in the trunk of a car outside a San Antonio medical center.
The shooting occurred inside an SUV parked outside the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center in San Antonio.
A woman was sitting inside with three children, ages 11 months, two, and three, when one of the older children found a loaded gun and fired one round, striking and killing 11-month-old Khamari Lang, KENS 5 reported.
"This tragedy and any tragedy like this are 100% preventable," San Antonio Police Sgt. Washington Moscoso told KENS 5. "Securing guns safely, securing ammunition and restricting access; those three things will prevent these shootings every time."
The baby would have turned one in November. His family created a GoFundMe to pay for his funeral arrangements.
Police have not yet determined who owns the gun and no charges have been announced, KENS 5 reported.
