A baby falls eight stories from a New York City apartment window and miraculously survives. In the tragic event that took place Wednesday in West Harlem, a woman holding her baby son in her arms fell from an eighth floor apartment window in what appeared to be a suicide.
The woman, identified as Cynthia Wachenheim, was found dead on the street by a neighbor who was walking to a grocery store with his mother, the Huffington Post reported. The young passerby saw the woman fall, and said the baby bounced off her body before hitting the ground nearby. The woman's body seems to have cushioned the impact of the fall for the boy.
A police officer took the boy, 10-month-old Keston, to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition but is stable, according to the Huffington Post. It is still unclear what the extent of his injuries are at this time.
Upon further investigation, police found a seven-page suicide note under a bed in Wachenheim's apartment. Wachenheim, 45, shared the apartment with her husband. CBS News reports that Wachenheim recognized that what she was going to do was "evil," but she was worried about the baby's development, a law enforcement official said.
The apartment window that the woman plunged from had no safety bars and was found wide open. Police said there were no signs of struggle inside the apartment, which is in a newer building that faces Jackie Robinson Park. Wachenheim's husband was caught on surveillance cameras leaving the apartment building about an hour before his wife jumped from the window, the Associated Press reports.
Yaa Dwamena, 32, a resident of the building that Wachenheim lived in, told the AP, "I wouldn't have thought anything was wrong with her. They were a happy-looking family. I wouldn't think anything like this would happen."
