Atlético de Madrid has eliminated Barcelona in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League cup, making Atletico one of the most successful teams of the season with an incredible eight wins in 2013-2014. With a goal in the first five minutes from Jorge "Koke" Merodio, Atletico got off to an impressive start at Vicente Calderon stadium. The play started with David Villa sending a shot to the centre that was taken by Adrian Lopez for a header by Jorge Resurreccion 'Koke,' who finished off the play with an impressive goal.
Villa continued an impressive form throughout the match, with two shots at the 10th and 19th minutes which grazed the crossbar of Jose Manuel Pinto's goal. Not even the work of Neymar or the incredible Lionel Messi were enough to save the game as the team was not able to convert their play to the scoreboard. Barcelona had not lost a Champions League game since 2003 (8 wins and 7 ties). The match was a great disappointment for Gerardo Martino who has led the team since just last year.
Atletico closed the match with some impressive counterattacks and made it very difficult for Barcelona to get within scoring range. They could not quite match their electric performance from the the first half, however, and Barcelona's defence managed to keep the scoreless in the second half. Diego Simeone will surely be writing a new chapter in the history of the club when it plays in the semifinals on the 22nd or the 23rd of April with an unknown rival who will be decided on Friday. Chelsea and Real Madrid made it through last night.
