Atlanta Teacher Found Dead 45 Feet Underwater Month After Fiancé Was Just Weeks Away From Getting Married

An Atlanta teacher just weeks away from getting married was found 45 feet underwater in Lake Oconee, near where police had previously found his fiancé.

Gary Jones and Joycelyn Wilson disappeared while fishing on the lake on February 8. Jones, a high school physics teacher and track coach, and Wilson, a college instructor, planned to marry on March 14, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The Putnam County Sheriff verified through video that Jones had launched a small, two-seater fishing boat on February 8. Police also confirmed the couple were staying at a hotel on the lake, the Associated Press reported.

After launching the boat, Jones drove it over to the hotel and picked up Wilson. The couple then went to apparently go fishing, but just 90 minutes later, people spotted the boat floating empty, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Police later found Jones sneakers floating nearby the empty boat. A search was launched and police were able to find and recover Wilson's body, the AP reported. Jones, however, remained missing for weeks.

When Jones was found Sunday, his body was located about a 100 feet from where police previously found Wilson, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The family had brought in Wisconsin search-and-recovery expert Keith Cormican to assist.

"Everybody was happy that we finally found the body, and quite relieved," Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told the newspaper. "Obviously, Mr. Cormican proves he really knows what he's doing."
