Atlanta Man Dead After Gun Fight Inside Grocery Store: 'This Doesn't Normally Happen in the Store'

A verbal altercation quickly turned into a gunfight in an Atlanta grocery store on Monday, leaving one man dead and another in the hospital.

Two men engaged in a gunfight on Monday at Family Grocery Store LLC, located at 875 Metropolitan Parkway, following an argument the two had in the store. Law enforcement responded to the scene where a 20-year-old man was pronounced dead. Another man, an 18-year-old, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition.

"We do know from the [surveillance] video that there was some type of verbal altercation just minutes before the shooting happened," Atlanta Police Lt. Andrew Smith told Channel 2.

According to homicide commander Lt. Andrew Smith, a total of 5 shots from handguns were fired by both men. They appeared to know each other before the incident occurred.

No other customers were in the store at the time of the incident, and no workers were injured.

"Bullets were flying, but they didn't get hit," Smith said.

Residents of the area have expressed gratitude for the fact that no one else was injured during the altercation, especially considering that store staff were present during the incident.

"Thank God they didn't get hit," resident Lonnie Walker told journalists from Channel 2. "They have been in that store for some years, man. I've been knowing them for a long time."

"This doesn't normally happen in the store," Walker continued.
