Arvind Mahankali of Queens bested some top veterans at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The 13-year-old won the competition Thursday evening, taking home $30,000 in cash and his trophy, the Huffington Post reported.
The bee tests competitor's brain power and composure, with this year's competition requiring participants know the definitions of the words they were spelling.
The New York Daily News sponsored the boy, an eighth grader at Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School 74. He placed third in his last two times at Scripps.
The spelling bee started with 281 entrants, which was cut down to fewer than 12 for the finals based on a series of spelling and vocabulary tests, as well as their performances onstage, the New York Daily News reported.
Mahankali spelled his final word 'knaidel' to take the competition.
