The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Purdue Boilermakers have been playing football against one another since 1896, creating one of the longest tenured rivalries in college sports. Playing for the prized Shillelagh Trophy each season, the Irish and Boilers lay it all on the line every year and while there is always a level of physicality, a strong level of familiarity exists as well since the school's are separated by just over 2 hours of traveling time. The 2013 version of the Shillelagh Trophy takes place in West Lafayette this weekend and you can be sure all those in attendance will be ready to go once kickoff arrives.

In 2012, Notre Dame finished the regular season with an unblemished record of 12-0. Defeating the Boilermakers in South Bend 17-14, the Irish and coach Brian Kelly received one of their toughest tests all season. Thanks to stout defense and timely scoring, Purdue was able to hang in with the heavily favored Irish until Tommy Rees - then the backup quarterback to now suspended Everett Golson - led the game-winning drive that ultimately propelled the Blue and Gold for the remainder of the 2012-2013 campaign.

While Notre Dame advanced to the BCS Title game - losing to Alabama - Purdue finished the year 6-6. Despite the fact that the team was invited to play Oklahoma State in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, head coach Danny Hope was relieved of his duties. Replaced by Darrell Hazell - former head coach at Kent State - the Boilermakers hope a change on the sideline leads to vast improvement on the gridiron.
