Week 1 of the 2013 NFL season is in the books and as each of the 32 teams across the league make final preparations for their next game, all eyes in football will be on the upcoming showdown between the New England Patriots and New York Jets, the two teams that will jumpstart the second official week of the season. With both squads coming off close victories in their respective openers, the Jets and Pats renew a rivalry that has added another level to the 'New York vs. Boston' series outside of just the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

The Patriots needed a clutch performance down the stretch from three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady to past by a pesky Buffalo Bills team last weekend. Trailing 21-20 in the fourth quarter, Brady completed seven total passes on the final drive to receiver Danny Amendola and running back Shane Vereen, setting up the game-winning 35-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski with just 5 seconds remaining. Opening the season with a division victory is always crucial and while the Patriots were busy disposing of the rival Bills, New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith put together a game winning drive of his own - with a little help.

With the Jets staring an opening week loss right in the face after surrendering the go-ahead field goal to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers late in the fourth quarter, Smith and company needed to make something happen fast. With only 34 seconds remaining and trailing 18-17, the former University of West Virginia standout led a game-winning drive that was aided by a major mistake on the part of Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David. Dropping back to pass from his own 45, Smith realized he needed to improvise. Running downfield and toward the sideline, Smith picked up 10 yards but thanks to a late hit by David, the Jets were awarded 15 yards due to a personal foul call. Kicker Nick Folk drilled a 48-yard field goal with only 2 second remaining, sending the Jets sideline into a frenzy while leaving Tampa Bay to wonder what could have been.
