Much like Premier League rival Manchester United, the Arsenal Gunners had big plans for the current transfer window. Club manager Arsene Wenger was set on bringing in some of the top players in the sport since he was handed a large sum of spending money after the team's fourth place finish in the EPL a season ago but thanks to multiple failed signings, the Emirates boss is left without a top-level move with only 6 days remaining in the official transfer period.
According to multiple sources, the Gunners may turn their attention to Real Madrid star Mesut Özil as a late window alternative. Özil has been taken out of back-to-back games by Madrid manager Carol Ancelotti and as speculation begins to grow surrounding the 24-year-old's happiness - or lack thereof - at the Bernabeu, the thought process is that the talented midfielder may desire a change of scenery. Many outlets, including ESPN FC, believe the young talent is willing to listen to offers from Arsenal along with Manchester United.
In addition to pursuing Özil, The Independent indicates that Arsene Wenger and company could make a play for Real's Angel Di Maria. The pending double transfer will of course hinge on the situation regarding Real Madrid's acquiring of Gareth Bale. Bale reportedly arrived in Spain over the weekend ahead of an expected record-breaking contract but the Tottenham midfielder has yet to sign an official agreement, leaving the plans for Arsenal to land the Real duo in a state of temporary limbo.
Though past failures could have dampened Arsene Wenger's drive to go after top players, The Telegraph notes that the potential deal for Özil and Di Maria - who the club may be able to land with a £60 million fee - would certainly lighten up a downtrodden transfer season for the Wenger and the Gunners.
Although Arsène Wenger's priority this summer had been to recruit a world class centre-forward, he would regard Özil as an option he has to pursue if he does become available.
Özil is a specialist in the playmaker role vacated by Cesc Fabregas and, although Santi Cazorla can also play in that position, both players can operate across the three attacking midfield positions.
Wenger also believes that Di María would add pace and a very different option to the left side of his attack.
As the transfer window continues to creep towards its September 2 closing, multiple player transactions - including this one concerning Mesut Özil - will continue to grab headlines across the soccer universe.
