In a tragic turn of events, an armed man suspected of stabbing his own mother was killed by police on Tuesday, Aug. 3, after a short standoff between the authorities and the alleged attacker proved fatal.
The man, yet to be named as of press time, was reportedly a 22-year-old who was found by the police with a handgun outside an apartment building in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, according to Penn-Live Patriot-News. On the steps of the apartment was a woman with multiple stab wounds, reportedly the man's mother.
Kevin Steele, the District Attorney for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, said that the police were dispatched to the Plymouth Gardens apartment complex at around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday to respond to a domestic disturbance.
Upon arrival, they encountered the armed man and the injured woman who was later identified as the suspected attacker's mother. She had sustained multiple stab wounds, though the man did not have a knife in his possession when the standoff occurred, according to ABC affiliate WPVI.
When officers in the area asked the armed man to put down his weapon, he was said to have pointed the gun at the officers, at which point a policeman discharged his weapon, Steele said. It is unclear as of now if the man had intended to shoot the officer and why he did not comply with the requests of law enforcement.
The officers proceeded to assist the wounded man and sent him to the Suburban Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday after succumbing to his injuries.
The man’s mother was brought to a different local hospital and is now in a stable condition, according to U.S. News & World Report.
It is still unknown as of press time why the man allegedly stabbed his mother, nor what he was doing outside the apartment complex armed with a handgun.
Meanwhile, as per the protocol for every officer-related shooting, county detectives will now investigate the matter to ensure the proper de-escalation process was followed.
