Family members of an Arizona woman found her decapitated body while searching for her after she failed to show up to her own surprise birthday party.
49-year-old Teresa DeJesus Cruz Rubio was found dead inside of her Glendale home on Friday.
"The family had prepared a surprise birthday celebration for the victim. Earlier that day at around 3:40 PM, family members contacted the victim, who had agreed to gather with them," reported Glendale Police. "When the victim failed to show up to the gathering, the family became concerned and went to her home where they discovered her decapitated body."
"The 911 caller stated a family member was inside the house, was deceased, and that the victim's head had been cut off," Glendale Police Sgt. Bryan Hoskin said.
KSAZ reported that Cruz Rubio's sister had been the last to speak to her prior to her death, calling her to confirm her attendance at the event which should have been her surprise birthday party. She also told law enforcement that she had given her car, a burgundy GMC Yukon, to Cruz Rubio to use and that it was missing.
Police stated that Cruz Rubio's son, 25-year-old Alejandro Gonzalez, admitted to stabbing his mother multiple times using a kitchen knife. Records show that Gonzalez had been released from jail for unrelated charges less than a day before Cruz Rubio was killed.
Law enforcement found Gonzalez in the burgundy SUV, covered in blood with injuries on his hands and arms.
According to family members, not only had he been living at his mother's apartment, but he had also been using Cruz Rubio's car around 5 p.m. the day she was killed and had reportedly used her phone to call relatives on the same day.
Gonzalez was taken to the Glendale Police station for questioning, after which he was booked into the Maricopa County Jail, with his bail being set at $1 million, cash only.
