A woman’s misguided focus led to her arrest after she accidentally shot an Arizona Ace Hardware store employee instead of the two shoplifters she wanted to nab.
As per a report on MSN News, Nya Reyes, 45, alleged that she fired at least two “stop shots” toward the vehicle in an attempt to stop the robbers from speeding away but did not hurt anyone. She has been arrested and faces multiple charges: for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a weapon within city limits. Reyes however co-operated with the police.
As per court paperwork, the incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday at the Ace Hardware near 32nd Street and Indian School Road. Cops were alerted of the incident at around 9 a.m. and arrived at the scene to find the employee with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound on his knee. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for his injury.
Not much has been disclosed about the shoplifters, and a further probe into the matter is underway. The male employee who’s currently hospitalized is expected to survive.
In other news, an Arizona lawmaker known for his tough stance on abortion has introduced legislation requiring prosecutors to charge women who opt to end their pregnancies through abortion with homicide as per a report on AZCentral.
Rep. Walt Blackman, R-Snowflake, had strongly expressed his interest in giving a nod to such a bill late last summer, and reportedly called abortion clinics “death factories” and saying women who voluntarily terminated pregnancies should “spend some time in our Arizona penal system.”
“If you want to spout, ‘My body, my body choice,’ you need to spend some time in our Arizona penal system,” said Blackman in August last year. “If you are going to kill and end the life of another human being, that is murder.”
