Convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro, also known as the Cleveland Kidnapper has been found dead in his jail cell after committing suicide by hanging himself. The (1.) 52-year-old had only just begun his prison sentence of life plus 1,000 years for the kidnapping and rape of three Ohio women. Castro held Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight prisoner for nearly a decade. The three women were rescued in May, when Amanda Berry worked up enough courage to escape from the house where she was being held and get help from neighbors.

On August 1, 2013 Castro learned of his fate at his sentencing hearing. The prosecutors went over all of the evidence and called witness after witness to tell the judge what they had seen during the rescue of the three women and the search of the house. (2.) During his hearing Castro attempted to gain sympathy from the judge by saying that he was not a monster. Castro even went so far as to say there was harmony in the house and accused the women of asking him for sex on occasion. (3.) Once in jail Castro was placed in protective custody and kept away from the other inmates due to his high profile case.

Ariel Castro killed himself on Tuesday night, the warden at the Cleveland prison where he was incarcerated called Castro's family at 1am Wednesday morning, the family told CNN. The family also said they already heard about the suicide on the news. Once Castro's crimes had been made public his family estranged themselves from him wanting nothing to do with a man who was brought up on over 900 counts of kidnapping, rape and murder. (4.) Maria Castro-Montes told CNN she cried when she heard Ariel Castro was dead. She told the news organization she was not crying out of sadness for Castro but out of concern for the victims.

"It was just shock and part of it was even relief in hopes that now this will just end all of it and that his name will not be out in the spotlight for years and years to come," Castro-Montes told CNN. "I just hope the victims can move past this now." Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight have all been made aware that Castro hung himself in his jail cell. Berry's lawyer (5.) told CNN that none of the three women will be making a public statement at this time.
