After being constantly labeled as someone’s ex or as someone’s new love interest, the media has apparently reached Ariana Grande's limit. The whole thing blew over after Grande told The Sun, “I'm tired of needing to be linked to a guy, I'm not Big Sean’s ex, I'm not Niall's new possible girl. I'm Ariana Grande,” after saying, “A girl can be friends with someone with a d--- and not hop on it.” When things started spiraling out of control, the songstress took matters into her own hands and wrote a powerful, feminist essay she shared on her Twitter page.

The post starts by explaining why all women deserve to speak their minds: “Being ‘empowered’… is not the same as being a ‘bitch’… HAVING SOMETHING TO SAY… is not the same as HAVING A BAD ATTITUDE,” she wrote, before clarifying why she said that to the newspaper in the way that she did: “What I meant when I said what I said about not being Sean’s ex is that I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY / POSSESSION. I… do not. belong. to anyone. but myself. and neither do you.”

The 21-year-old star then went on to shed light on the unfairness as to how women can address their sexuality: “If a woman has a lot of sex (or any sex for that matter)… she’s a ‘slut.’ If a man has sex…. HE’S. A. STUD. A BOSSSSSS. a KING…” Grande then goes on to conclude with a Gloria Steinem quote, “Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke. She will need her sisterhood.”
