When Karina Villaroel and Soledad Ortiz of Argentina sent a Facebook message to Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, they probably did not expect for the leader of their country to respond, let alone oblige their request. But that's exactly what Kirchner did, according to her Twitter.
Villaroel and Ortiz, a lesbian couple, became the proud parents to a newborn on Jan. 27 after Ortiz underwent in-vitro fertilization. After their daughter's birth, they reached out to Kirchner asking her to be the godmother of their child, Umma Azul. Kirchner, who is the mother of two, reportedly saw the message and agreed to be the godmother.
"Cristina has agreed to be godmother," said Villaroel to reporters, according to reports. "What a great gesture! I hope she can come to the [baptism] ceremony and does not send a representative. It's a dream come true for us."
That said, there is no confirmation as to whether or not Kirchner will be attendance of the baptism, which is being reported to be the first time a child of an Argentine lesbian couple has been baptized.
"We come from Catholic families but do not go to church often ourselves," said Villaroel. "We want to baptize her and then the baby can decide what she wants to do, and follow her own heart."
Kirchner's office pushed for the same-sex legislation in 2010 which made same-sex marriage legal in Argentina, making the nation the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples are also allowed to adopt in Argentina.
