Since Apple's release of their newest software, iOS 7, it has yet to been cracked. The redesigned Apple software has yet to receive a jailbreak. So a number of prominent people who really want to see this software jailbroken have banded together to establish the "Device Freedom Prize." Science fiction author and digital freedom activist Cory Doctorow have met with other likeminded people to crowdfund a reward for the first open source iOS 7 jailbreak. The idea came from Elizabeth Stark, an entrepreneur-in-residence at StartX, a Stanford University accelerator.
Contrary to what the site says there is a jailbreak available for the new iOS 7 software. iJailbreak Pro has released a paid jailbreak that ranges in price from $30-$50, but the catch is it is not open source. The pitch for the group makes it clear what they want and what they want to do. "We strongly believe that users should have the freedom to control their devices," the group says. "We want an open source jailbreak for iOS 7, giving users the capability to install what they want on their own devices and the ability to audit the code they're using to do so."
There is a criteria that must be met before submitting a jailbreak. It must work on the iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, and 5S, and it must also work with the latest version of iOS, which at this time is 7.04. The license it is released under must be one of the existing open source licenses available, for example, MIT, BSD, GPL, or Apache. The jailbreak can't be charged for in any way, and it must be an untethered solution that's "accessible to the average user." So it can't be hard to use then.
As of now the prize for the open source jailbreak is over $2000. There is a window of 18 months to find and submit this open source jailbreak and collect the prize or the site will be taken down. The growing pot of cash available will definitely catch the eye of hackers everywhere. But it makes you wonder if the prize will be claimed before the 18 month window has closed?
