The popular Emoji app has come under scrutiny many times due to its lack of diversity with its characters. And even the one diverse icon they have is a brown guy with a turban, which is slightly offensive. Now it looks like Apple is ready to change that. The company’s vice president of worldwide corporate communications, Katie Cotton, spoke to MTV Act saying that it is working with the Unicode Consortium to add more diverse characters.

"Tim forwarded your email to me. We agree with you. Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms. There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.”

Apple isn’t the only one who feels emoji needs to update their characters. Back in 2012 “pop princess” Miley Cyrus wrote on Twitter condemning the company for it’s lack of multicultural icons tweeting, “RT if you think there needs to be an #emojiethnicityupdate.” And earlier this month Tahj Mowry co-signed with Cyrus tweeting, “It makes me mad that there are no black emojis…” Check out the tweets below.

As The Verge points out Apple’s last big update to the emoji collection was in 2012 when the company added a gay and lesbian couple as part of iOS 6.
