Miguel Herrera has been one of the most successful managers in the competitive Liga MX in recent time. Coaching Mexico's América squad to monumental success over the past year, El Piojo was rewarded in the biggest of ways when he was named full-time coach of the Mexican national soccer team after the club parted with Chepo de la Torre during qualification. Leading El Tri past New Zealand in a two-legged qualifying playoff, Herrera hopes to continue his luck with the team once the World Cup begins in June of 2014.
Herrera, who recently led América to the 2013 Apertura final, will take a break from a team that owns 11 league titles in its history. Falling to León in the final by way of a 5-1 aggregate, the El Tri boss surely departs on a bit of a sour note but after guiding the team to the 2013 Clausura final, Herrera brings a strong winning pedigree to Brazil where he hopes to take Mexico on a strong run. While he begins his full-time duties with the national squad, America announced that former Tijuana head coach Antonio Mohamed will step into the lead role.
In addition to guiding Tijuana, the Argentine manager has also been the boss for Club Atletico Huracan, a 'B' affiliate in Argentina. Comfortable with the new leader, América president Ricardo Pelaez said an immediate show of support for Mohamed will be necessary. "It is good to know that he is taking on the job and is aware how important the continuity of this project is," Pelaez said. "He's a good coach and he's ambitious. I've had talks with him and after his success with Tijuana and being that his teams were always in good form. It will be extremely important to get behind the new coach since the stakes are very high and success will be consistently desired."
