A man in New Jersey who is reported to have virulent antisemitic views was arrested on Saturday, April 9, after he went on a crime spree against the local Jewish community and injured three men in an attempt to kill them.
Twenty-seven-year-old Dion Marsh was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he tried to run over two men with a carjacked vehicle while stabbing another man in the chest. Nobody has been reported killed during Marsh’s crime spree, according to the New York Post.
Marsh, whose girlfriend had recently broken up with him, had initially told a family member that what he had planned was “going to be a blood bath,” without going into any specifics. Marsh expressed antisemitic remarks when he was arrested, saying that Hasidic Jews “are the real devils.”
One of the victims was found outside the home of a man who was preparing to go to synagogue. His wife went to him, saying that she found someone passed out in their yard, and found him to be bleeding when the couple inspected him further, ABC 6 reported.
“I bent down and I grabbed his hand and I saw blood coming off of his forehead and I said, ‘Moshe, everything's going to be okay,’” the man said. “Hatzalah's on their way. And he grabbed my foot and I kind of just stayed there with him until the medics came.”
Many people in the community were shocked at the brazenness of the bigotry displayed, with the local Anti-Defamation League director Scott Richman decrying the incident as “cruelty” before asking for a broader investigation of the case and more protection for the community.
“More needs to be done proactively to prevent violence against the Jewish community, and in particular visibly identifiable Jews in Ocean County and across our region,” Richman said.
“For something to happen over a six-hour period of time throughout Lakewood and Jackson, it really shook our community and brought all the law enforcement together,” Orthodox Jew Moe Rabi said.
Marsh is currently locked up at Ocean County Jail with no bail set as of press time.
