Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pledged to remove fluoride from U.S. drinking water despite having previously co-founded a water bottle company that sold fluoridated water concentrations higher than most tap water.
Kennedy, known for his environmental activism and leadership in the Waterkeeper Alliance, founded Keeper Springs in 1999 to financially support his mission, New Republic reported.
The water brand, marketed with eco-friendly claims, contained up to 1.3 milligrams of fluoride per liter–nearly double the recommended level in tap water.
Despite this, Kennedy did not publicly express opposition to fluoride during that time. Years later, in 2013, the company ceased operations due to low sales and environmental criticisms.
Kennedy's more recent anti-fluoride stance gained attention as he prepared to assume a leadership role in 2017 in the Trump administration's Department of Health and Human Services.
He has since publicly denounced fluoride as a "neurotoxic industrial waste," despite widespread scientific support for its role in preventing tooth decay.
His prior involvement in selling fluoridated bottled water has sparked allegations of hypocrisy from the public.
