Remarks made against Elon Musk are now considered "hate speech" by D.C. police following a string of vandalism of Tesla vehicles.
On Monday, the D.C. police department published a press release pleading for the public's assistance in locating two suspects wanted for defacing Tesla vehicles, adding that they were "investigating these offenses as potentially being motivated by hate or bias." The department even offered $1,000 for any information leading to their arrest.
The hate speech in question, according to Politico, included lighthearted defacement that poked fun at Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency despite a police department spokesperson defending the classification because of the language.
"Let's do away with the administrative state! Buy a tesla!," "I like what Musk is doing," "Go Doge I support Musk killing the dept of education," "Ask me about my support of Nazis," and "I love Musk and hate the Fed Gov't," were some of the messages written, according to reporting by Politico.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's office also told Politico they were not involved in the police department's decision-making on the investigation.
