The first look at the movie remake of the 1977 musical “Annie” is here. Youngest Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) takes on the role of the spunky little orphan Annie, with big names Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx by her side. In case you didn’t know, “Annie” is a Broadway musical based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little Orphan Annie,” with a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. This remake’s overall story line is very similar to the 1982 movie adaptation, except is set in a modern era, instead of the Depression era.
Cameron Diaz, who plays Miss Hannigan, reminds us in the trailer when she says “Aren’t I supposed to be married to George Clooney?” and later “Look for me, like me on Facebook!” making it very clear this movie is definitely set in 2014. Another modern twist is the music. Although classics like “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “Tomorrow” will still have the same lyrics and melody, they’re getting a makeover since Jay Z and Will Smith are the producers of this film, and if you can listen, they feel a little bit more “popified” in the trailer than the theatre version.
Jamie Foxx plays Benjamin Stacks, a rebranded Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks. In this version he is a wealthy entrepreneur who’s running for mayor of New York City and comes across Annie. He develops a relationship with the girl in order to boost his political career. “The more we’re seen together, the better it is for my campaign,” he tells Annie. She replies: “I bet if I moved in with you, you’d become president.” In the end, Stacks clearly starts genuinely caring for this little girl. "Sometimes what you're looking for is right in front of your face," he says in the film.
Just by watching the trailer your heart warms a little bit and it makes you laugh, and cry in a good way. This upcoming film was directed by Will Gluck and also features Rose Byrne, who plays Stack’s VP and Bobby Cannavale, portraying his campaign adviser. Of course, Sandy the dog also makes an appearance. Emma Thompson is one of the credited screenwriters. The film will come to the screens on Christmas Day, but you can catch a glimpse below with the official trailer.
