Looks like things are heating up over at the TODAY Show.
Just days after it was officially announced that Senior Broadcast Producer Don Nash would take over duties as the executive producer on Dec. 1, the National Enquirer is reporting that co-host Matt Lauer is getting cut.
"It's just desserts. Matt is finally getting what he deserves!" a Studio 1-A set insider told The ENQUIRER. "His years-long feuds with former co-hosts Katie Couric, Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry have taken their toll. Everyone has turned against him, and Matt is going to be ousted because he's being blamed for the show's collapse."
Last week, the Daily News reported that "TV industry insiders say no amount of NBC executive reshuffling can save the embattled 'Today' show - until its longtime co-host throws in the towel."
The Enquirer said 9 a.m hour co-host Willie Geist is being pushed to take over Lauer's spot.
"Adding a fresh new guy like Willie to the mix is just what Al feels 'Today' needs to help pull the show out of the ratings doldrums and compete with 'GMA,'" the source told the magazine.
TODAY has been consistently beaten in the ratings by ABC's Good Morning America following a 16-year winning streak.
After NBC fired Curry, GMA viewership skyrocketed and kept beating "Today" in TV ratings.
Curry was rehired by NBC as a News National and International Correspondent/Anchor and "Today" Anchor at Large. Curry reports for all platforms of NBC News including "Today," "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams," "Rock Center with Brian Williams," "Dateline," MSNBC, and all digital properties. Curry also serves as anchor for multiple NBC News primetime specials, regularly substitute anchors for "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" and reports for "Rock Center with Brian Williams."
"GMA" has been without its co-anchor Robin Roberts who is on medical leave for treatment of M.D.S., a rare blood and bone marrow disorder. During Roberts' absence, ABC News' Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric , Barbara Walters and Elizabeth Vargas and Oprah Winfrey, Kelly Ripa, Chris Rock, Rob Lowe and the cast of ABC's "Modern Family will help lead the GMA ship.
