Anja Niedringhaus, an acclaimed photographer for the Associated Press was killed while covering an upcoming national election in Afghanistan. She gave her talents to the world, always covering wars and dangerous scenarios. She took images of war victims in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and others. She was shot to death by an Afghan policeman.
48 year old Niedringhaus started her career as a freelance photographer for a local newspaper in her hometown of Hoexter, Germany at the age of 16. She landed a staff position with the European Pressphoto Agency in 1990 after her coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
She joined the Associated Press in 2002. She was part of the team that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News.
