A mother who was angry over her three-year-old daughter because she wouldn’t stop crying ended up killing the toddler by snapping her neck. The woman later attempted to kill herself, police said.
The 27-year-old mother, who has not been named by the police, was arrested on Monday, Nov. 15, for strangling her baby girl to death at their home in Gurgaon, India.
According to the police, the accused woman reportedly lost her temper when she failed to pacify the bawling toddler. In a fit of rage, she grabbed her baby girl’s throat, asphyxiating her and snapping her neck.
When the woman realized the child wasn’t breathing, she attempted to kill herself by slitting her wrist.
When her husband returned home, he found the door locked from the inside. After he did not get a response from his wife, he broke open the door to find her bleeding profusely and rushed her to a nearby hospital before the blood loss turned fatal.
“When I went into the house, my wife was lying on the floor. She had slit her wrist, but she was breathing. Then I spotted my daughter on the bed. She was not breathing. She had died,” said Pradeep Singh.
The woman was arrested after she was discharged from the hospital, ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said.
In her statement to police, the accused mother said she reacted out of anger but did not intend to kill the child.
“The child was crying, and despite her repeated attempts, the kid continued to cry. This made her furious and she ended up strangling the child,” the Times of India quoted the officer as saying.
In a complaint to the police, the accused woman’s husband reported that his wife was short-tempered and that there were multiple incidents in the past when she lost her cool on their daughter.
Based on his complaint, the woman was booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
