Latin Times: Congratulations on your nomination! Tell us what this means to you?
Aneeka: What can I say? Im absolutely thrilled to be nominated. It’s a dream come true especially being surrounded by so much talent means so much to me. Of course I’d love to win but the honor of being nominated is already a major milestone in my career.
LT: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I had the chance to participate in their CD/DVD taping live. I interpreted the theme “Que Nadie Sepa Mi Sufrir” which by the way is by “La Sonora Dinamita” with Margarita but we did the version of the “Sonora Santanera” and it sounded really great, super fun. I’m also going to tour in Central America to release another couple of singles since I’m a little bit ahead in Mexico. And I’ve also started recording some songs in English that I hope I can release next year.
LT: Are you thinking of gradually switching to English completely or are you going to keep recording in both languages?
A: I’m starting to record songs that were originally written in English unlike my other songs, which are translated. These English songs are targeted for the anglo audience.
LT: So you live in Mexico?
A: I go back and forth between Mexico and Miami but sometimes have work in LA too, so I do a lot of travel all over the place.
LT: Tell us about your hit single “Sin Combustible,” what or who inspired it?
A: Well, it’s very dramatic, quite sad and it was composed by Monica Velez, a great Mexican composer and produced by Ettore Grenci . I loved this song because we’ve all gotten to that point where we’re out of fuel and even though I didn’t write the song, I’ve gone through all the things it says so I really relate to it.
LT: The music video for it was filmed in New York, correct?
A: Yes! We did it in New York, it was produced by GK Reid, who also did my first video, “Ojo por ojo” but the general idea for the video was mine. I wanted to represent the sadness, like my soul was breaking and I was drowning in suffering. That’s why I wanted it to be in a pool with a dress that showed how broken I was. And I’ve been there; when a person betrays you, you end up numb, fuel-less.
LT: What artist do you dream about collaborating with?
A: Oh, I’d love to sing with Celine Dion or Beyonce; Laura Pausini would be great too, there are so many artists I’d love to work with, that’s a tough one.
LT: How important is having a successful career for your country right now?
A: Well, I’m not sure my career has anything to do with the actual situation my country’s going through which is draining; an absolute nightmare. I left Venezuela to pursue my dreams but it’s always in my heart from a distance and I certainly hope our people and our country can get through this very soon. I just hope I can continue doing what I love and what I've worked for since I was a little girl which is to entertain people singing.
LT: Well, we wish you the best of luck at the Latin Grammys. We'll be watching and cheering!
