Racer killed in Moscow crash

Andrea Antonelli an Italian motorcycle racer of team Goeleven Kawasaki was killed on Sunday in a motorcycle crash during a race in Moscow. The track for the World Supersport Race was slick because it was raining that day. In the video of the crash you can see how slick the track was as a result of the wet weather.

The 25-year-old Antonelli crashed during the first lap of the race. Reports say that Antonelli lost control of his bike and his head collided with the bike of another rider. Medical officials at the scene called an ambulance, not wanting to risk a helicopter transport due to the seriousness of his the racer's injuries.

Racing officials at the Moscow track at first postponed the remaining races until the afternoon but later canceled them indefinitely. A statement issued by the racing officials said, "During today's FIM World Supersport race, at 1:32pm Italian rider Andrea Antonelli (Team Goeleven Kawasaki) suffered a serious accident on the straight between Turn 14 and Turn 15 wherein he sustained critical injuries."

"The race was stopped with the red flag and the rider was immediately taken to an ambulance where medical staff worked to resuscitate him," the statement continued. "Despite their efforts, Andrea sadly succumbed to his injuries at 2:10pm local time."

According to the Daily Mail Antonelli is the second Italian racer to be killed in two years. In 2011 Superbike racer Marco Simonceli was killed during a race in Sepang.
