A 32-year-old anaesthetist heavily sedated a pregnant woman to allegedly sexually assault her while carrying out a C-section.
After being caught on camera assaulting the woman at the Hospital da Mulher in São João de Meriti, Rio de Janeiro, Giovanni Quintella Bezerra was arrested on suspicion of rape, reported The Sun.
It was his colleagues who first became suspicious about the amounts of drugs that he was giving to his patients. He is said to have carried out two other surgeries on Sunday. But his medical team struggled to set up a hidden camera to find out what he was doing. At the last minute, his team managed to change the operating room for his third surgery of the day. At that time, they instaled a secret camera.
The anaesthetist was seen putting his penis in the unconscious woman's mouth in the shocking footage. As the hospital’s surgical team began the C-section, the woman was seen lying on the bed. Bezerra, who was on the other side of the surgical sheet, assaulted the patient for nearly 10 minutes. He was less than a metre away from his colleagues.
An internal investigation will be opened to take "administrative measures," said the Health Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Secretary of State for Health. They also said that the team of the Hospital da Mulher is providing "full support to the victim and her family," and added that this behavior constitutes a crime, which "must be punished in accordance with the legislation in force."
Bezerra's heroic colleagues were praised by Barbara Lomb, from the local police station, for their "exemplary" professionalism. She said that it is necessary to highlight the "performance of the nursing team and exemplary health professionals who noticed the movement of the doctor’s body in other surgeries."
Fox 3 Now reported that Bezerra finished his medical specialization in anesthesia about two months ago.
Bezerra might have carried out similar attacks on two more mothers on the same day, so police are investigating it, reported Daily Mail. His custody hearing was held on Tuesday, and he was earlier transferred to the prison of Benfica. The anaesthetist is now facing charges of rape with a jail sentence that ranges from 8 to 15 years in Brazil.
