How could we forget Mecano, the iconic Spanish pop rock band from the 80's and 90's, and the sweet voice that led most of their songs? Yes, that intriguing sound. Soft as velvet, innocent as a little girl, yet mature enough -or maybe promiscuous- to convince the listeners that the stories told in their songs were somehow their life experiences. Their very intense life experiences.

Who would've thought that the tiny body hosting the voice that captivated a generation would be the center of a legal battle of this magnitude: the singer is being sued by the District Attorney's Office in Spain for tax evasion and fraud.

Ana Torroja is being accused for 5 counts of alleged tax evasion and fraud in deriving her income to foreign countries. She is being requested to pay 2 million euros (2.6 million dollars) and serve a sentence of 18 months in prison, although the State Bar demands the penalty to be 3 years in jail.

It all started when Ana Torroja bought a summer house in Camp de Mar (Andratx, Majorca). To finalize the deal, she hired lawyer Gabriel Feliu.

Some of the firm's clients have been tried, convicted and have faced fines for fraud as part of "Operación Relámpago" (Lightning Operation), which is trying to fight corruption on the alleged channeling of money through tax havens, money laundering and double sales of lots and alleged scams in Andratx, Majorca. The operation took off in April 2007.

As much as some want to see Ana Torroja in jail, she doesn't have any previous record, so if she reaches a settlement -which has happened in other similar cases- and she pleads guilty, pays extra fees and a fine, she will probably avoid jail time.
