An American woman has been placed under special psychiatric care in a Pakistan hospital after she traveled to the country to meet her 19-year-old online lover.
Onijah Andrew Robinson, 33, traveled to Pakistan in October 2024 to be with Karachi man Nidal Ahmed Memon, whom she claims to have married online, The Express reported.
Upon her arrival, Memon claimed his family did not approve of the marriage and ceased contact. Rather than return home, Robinson camped outside of a home formerly inhabited by Memon. Local officials eventually intervened, extending her visa and arranging a flight home. Robinson refused, listing various unusual demands, including large sums of money, weekly financial support from Memon, and Pakistani citizenship.
Robinson's son, Jeremiah Andrew Robinson, revealed that she suffers from mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, and believes her reasoning abilities are currently impaired.
For her safety, Robinson has been admitted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). JPMC spokesperson Jehangir Durani confirmed that Robinson has undergone an MRI scan and is undergoing further psychological and psychiatric assessments.
"The final determination of her mental health condition will be made based on these reports," he said.
Authorities in Karachi, while ensuring her security, have not taken any legal action against Memon. The US consulate has acknowledged the case but declined to comment due to privacy laws. Robinson remains under medical supervision as evaluations continue.
