An American tourist in Tokyo, Japan was arrested after he allegedly used his fingernails to carve five letters into a gate at the Meiji Jingu Shrine, which opened in 1920.
On Tuesday, the 65-year-old tourist allegedly carved five letters representing his family's names into a pillar at the Meiji Jingu Shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken.
The next day, Tokyo Metropolitan Police reviewed security camera footage and arrested him at his hotel, ABC Australia reported.
The tourist and his family are being assisted by staff members at the U.S. Embassy, a spokesperson confirmed to ABC Australia, but provided no further information.
