An 18-year-old American tourist reportedly threw a newborn baby out of a second-story hotel window in Paris shortly after giving birth.

The woman was part of a group of young adults from America traveling in Europe on a study trip. She was detained, and police opened an investigation into the homicide of a minor under 15, The Daily Mail reported. The child was rushed to a hospital but died.

The newspaper reported that the child was thrown from the window while the umbilical cord still was attached. The woman was also taken to the hospital for an operation in the aftermath of the incident, The Daily Mail reported.

Passerby on the street reportedly screamed as the events unfolded and quickly called authorities, Paris Match reported.

Police in Paris were apparently considering the possibility that this might be a case of pregnancy denial, NBC News reported. In such instances, an expectant mother either does not realize she is pregnant or does not accept the reality that she is pregnant.

Police have not yet released the woman's name.
