It is official. The 12th season of "American Idol" belongs to the ladies. After the men butchered their group performance of "I Can't Help Myself," the judges had no option but to send all three to the bottom half.

Lazaro Arbos, Burnell Taylor and Devin Velez competed for the two spots left. And even though Jimmy Iovine predicted that Arbos would be the one to hit the road, it was actually Chicago native Velez who scored the least number of votes.

Velez was gracious in defeat, though he admitted disappointment in the exit interview.

"It hurts, I am going to miss the peoples. But I like to think of the positive. It's been a great journey."

Judge Mariah Carey did not take it as well. The singer had been very open about her preference for baby faced Velez and his buttery voice and blend of Spanish and English vocals, and she burst into tears when it was announced that he would be going home.

Velez chose "Impossible" as his farewell song, and even though Randy Jackson and Keith Urban looked ready to use their save card on him and Carey teared up once again, Nicki Minaj looked unswayed. Not even the audience chants of "save, save, save" managed to convince her. Even host Ryan Seacrest looked surprised.

Alas, Velez will be packing his bags and going back to military school. But not all is lost to the blondie.

"I am not going to stop singing. It can only get better from here. Now, I'm hoping to go back home and win prom king."
