It's TV apocalypse!
This time, no one is safe, not even the judges, as American Idol faces its biggest makeover ever. "All four are gone," an insider told The Wrap about Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, and even Randy Jackson, who's been a judge since season one. "They feel they've lost their core audience and they want it back," the source added.
Producers are supposedly building the new judges' panel from scratch since they're planning on adopting a more economic approach to recruiting talent and don't want to give "big checks" to "divas" after Mariah Carey reportedly got $18 million for a year (more than the $15 million Jennifer Lopez scored) and Nicki Minaj nabbed $12 million.
The singing competition saw its worst-ever ratings when only 11 million fans tuned in. After such a horrible night for Idol history, Fox finally made up its mind. Not only are the judges gone, but the show's format will change too. The look will be redesigned and the "tribute nights" will be out. One thing that will remain the same: the audition episodes.
Fox Broadcasting chairman Kevin Reilly is in charge of "fixing Idol," and one of the first changes will be Marie-Antoinette styled: off with the head! Meaning that longtime executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is expected to be replaced. There's still no word on the future for FreemantleMedia, the producers of the show, or Ryan Seacrest for that matter, who's been the host for all 12 seasons.
Reps for Jackson, Carey and Minaj did not reply to The Wrap's request for comment. Reps for Fox and Urban declined to comment.
