A young adult, believed to be an American citizen, was allegedly fatally shot by a police officer in Mexico's Juarez on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the Melchor Ocampo neighborhood near Downtown Juarez, and was captured on security camera footage.

Chihuahua state authorities have launched an investigation into the shooting to determine the circumstances and whether the officer's actions were justified.

During a news conference Monday, Chihuahua state Deputy Attorney General Jesus Manuel Salas said, "We are looking for these videos that have been published and are circulating on social media. It is very regrettable that this happened," Border Report mentioned.

Salas further said that two men in the car, including the one who died and another who was injured, were believed to be American citizens. The third occupant, who recorded the video, was currently in custody.

The state police's Internal Affairs unit was reviewing the shooting as part of the investigation.

Salas noted concerns about the car's aggressive driving near the officer, but emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine the facts.

The officer involved was assisting a state prosecutor, who was serving a warrant in the area. Salas explained that the prosecutors often faced risks in Juarez and were typically accompanied by municipal police, state agencies, or the National Guard for protection during such operations.

The video showed a blue Ford Mustang approaching the officer, making a sharp left turn inches from him, and then reversing before the shooting happened.

Another video, recorded by someone inside the blue Mustang, was also circulating on social media. In the video, a passenger's panicked voice can be heard repeatedly shouting, "No! No! No!"

Just before the incident, the car's occupants were listening to music and talking in Spanish. The Mustang, which had yellow-and-red New Mexico license plates, stopped after crashing into a parked SUV.

Juarez, a city located on the border between Mexico and the United States, has long struggled with high crime levels.

The city is known for issues such as drug trafficking, cartel violence, and organized crime, which have contributed to a massive number of homicides and other violent incidents over the years.
