A speeding ambulance usually means that it’s rushing back to the hospital to save a patient’s life. Unfortunately for a 10-year-old girl, it was also an ambulance that took away her life when she was hit by the vehicle was on its way to respond to a 999 call.
Ten-year-old Shaniqua Loftman-Smith died nine days after she was accidentally hit by an ambulance while she was walking, Daily Mail reported. The emergency vehicle was responding to a 999 call on Dec. 22, when the accident happened at around 6:30 p.m. EST in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire.
Due to the force of the impact, the front windshield of the ambulance was smashed. Shaniqua was immediately taken to a hospital and was declared in critical condition upon her arrival.
Unfortunately, the young girl succumbed to her injuries nine days after the accident. Shaniqua died on Dec. 31, a day before the New Year celebrations.
“I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the patient's family at this very difficult time, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident,” Richard Henderson, chief executive of East Midlands Ambulance Service, said.
Henderson likewise explained that he could not make additional comments at the moment while a police investigation is still ongoing. “We continue to fully co-operate with the police in their investigation into what happened, and therefore it would be inappropriate for us to make any further comment at this time,” he added.
Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire Police said that Shaniqua’s family members “have asked for privacy at this difficult time.” The department’s serious collision investigation is still piecing up the clues together to find out what really transpired that led to the fatal accident.
Meanwhile, police ordered the closure of Low Wood Road, which lies between the junctions with Sellers Wood Drive and Hempshill Lane, on Dec. 22 as part of their investigative procedure. Meanwhile, authorities are urging anyone who might have witnessed the accident to come forward.
