Tablets are great gifts for the holidays.

Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 8.9" is now out and features a 1920x1200 HD display, integrated support for Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo!; a front-facing HD camera for taking photos or making video calls, a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor with Imagination PowerVR 3D graphics core, and free unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content.

The 16GB model costs $299 and the 32GB version costs $369.

Here's what the critics are saying.

Mashable - The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 does some serious damage, but the iPad 4th Gen gets the decision and retains the tablet leader title. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is by no means a failure. In many ways, it's as good as the smaller Kindle Fire HD, but throughout my tests I noticed odd bugs and glitches (which should all be fixable by software) and a somewhat disturbing lack of power that's especially obvious when you put the Fire HD 8.9 next to the iPad 4th Gen.

Gizmodo - Comfort. That's what the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 has over everything else. It's by far the most comfortable tablet to hold, and to read and watch movies on. But to be the full-fledged iPad and Nexus competitor we're hoping for, it needs to be more than just another pretty face.

Best Movies Ever Entertainment News - The Kindle Fire HD 8.9" is definitely worth buying as a tablet. It's pretty fast, has a great range of features, excellent screen and sound quality and hooks you up to Amazon content very effectively (if that's what you want). However, as an eReader it's really lacking. The backlit screen, weight and price will be prohibitive. If you're main interest is in a device for doing lots of reading, then you'll want to look at standard eReader alternatives. However, if you'll only be doing light reading and fancy the idea of having tablet features too, or just want a standout tablet, then this is a great choice.

Tech Crunch - Can I unequivocally recommend this Fire to the average user? I would say no. A tablet of this size and style has a very specific space in the pantheon of tablets, and I don't believe the Amazon app store and Fire UI are robust enough to support the tools users may want from a tablet at this price and this size.

Examiner - The Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 makes the ultimate Christmas gift. Not only is the size of the tablet perfect, but it offers a lot to consumers who consume a lot of media. The Dolby stereo speakers are the most shockingly great aspect of this device.

Laptop Mag - Amazon's 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD features a gorgeous full HD display, powerful speakers, and all-day battery life for an affordable price, but it can be glitchy.
