Alvaro Corcuera, former director of the Legion of Christ, died Monday at 1:35 PM in Mexico City after a long battle with cancer. Álvaro Corcuera Martínez del Río was CEO of Regnum Christi and the Legionaries of Christ from 2005-2014. Fr. Eduardo Robles Gil from the Legionaries of Christ wrote the following statement: "With a sorrowful yet hope-filled heart, I write to inform you that Fr. Álvaro Corcuera passed away today at 1:35 PM, central time, in the territorial directorate of Mexico City.
"He spent the last days of his life surrounded by his Legionary brothers and closest relatives. I had the blessing of being with him for almost a week, though I had to return to Rome on Friday. I especially remember that on June 20th, when we offered him holy Communion, he said clearly: “What a joy!” I think that it was with this joy that he went to meet the Lord. On Thursday, June 26th, we administered the Anointing of the Sick to him and he received it consciously."
Corcuera Martinez was born in Mexico City on July 22, 1957. In 1975 he began his life as consecrated lay Regnum Christi. In 1979 he joined the Legion of Christ. He was ordained a priest in 1985. In 1987 he was appointed rector of the Center for Advanced Studies of the Legionaries of Christ in Rome. The website stated: "Let us pray for one another, that we may all participate in that union with God that we desire the Lord to grant Fr. Álvaro. Let us also pray for all the Regnum Christi members who are sick and suffering, as well as their relatives and friends."
