Trump’s Approval Drops to 40% Amid Economic Concerns and Tariff Backlash

Close to two in three Latino voters (63%) now have an unfavorable view of President Donald Trump as concerns related to the future of the U.S. economy mount over the trade war.

The figure comes from a poll conducted by a group of Latino organizations: UnidosUS, Voces Unidas, LULAC and Climate Power en Acción. Called "First 100 Days Bipartisan Poll of the Hispanic Electorate," the initiative surveyed over 1,000 registered Latino voters across the country.

Results show that pocketbook issues are still the demographic's main concern, with the cost of living, jobs and housing taking the top three spots. Healthcare affordability and immigration close up the top five.

Over half of respondents (54%) said the economy is worse than last year, and six in ten say things are going in the wrong direction. Of that 60%, seven in ten say the Trump administration is to blame for this. 16% said former President Joe Biden is to blame for the rising cost of living.

Looking at the economic landscape, 60% of respondents said Trump and Republicans in Congress are not focusing enough on addressing the high cost of living. Moreover, 50% said current policies will make their economic situation worse in the next year.

A large majority is also showing concern about Trump's tariffs: two thirds said they will "reduce their economic opportunity and security by raising the price for goods and services; 64% believe tariffs were a bad move and that trade will be terrible for the United States."

"Latinos, once seen as a battleground demographic, have become disillusioned, with many shifting their support toward Trump only to face broken promises," said LULAC CEO Juan Proaño after the poll was released.

Another recent survey, this one by the Pew Research Center, showed that almost three in four Latinos (72%) now disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job as president, with 54% who do so strongly. Only Black people surveyed had a higher disapproval rate of Trump, with 82%.

The scenario contrasts with the gains made by Trump with the demographic in the last election, swinging 19 points to favor Trump nationally compared with 2020, according to preliminary exit polls. Harris still won a slight majority of the electorate, 52% to 46%, but it was a dramatic decrease over Joe Biden's 33-point margin in 2020.

Overall, 59% of respondents disapproved of Trump, compared to 40% who approved of him. Only Whites were close to having a net approval of the Republican, with 49% approving of Trump, including 39% who strongly did so. Asians, the other Demographic surveyed, showed a 69% disapproval rate, compared to a 29% approval one.
