As reported by IBT.com, Alicia Machado, the 1996 winner of Miss Universe pageant, representing Venezuela, is back in the news, thanks to a name-drop by Hillary Clinton during last night's presential debate. It is alleged that Machado suffered insults from Trump after she gained weight. Twenty years on, Ms. Machado is now a well-known actress throughout Latin America. It got us thinking about other famous Latinas who were once beauty queens.

Boricua Torres became one of the youngest Miss Universe pageant winners, when she received the crown in 1993 at the age of 18. She made her debut as a telenovela actress in Mexico's Telemundo's soap opera 'Dame Chocolate' in 2007.The Bolivian American actress won the Miss Fairest of the Fair beauty pageant in San Diego in 1957.Susie Castillo, who played Mercedes Hernandez on House of Payne, was Miss USA 2003.The Wheel of Fortune hostess was the fourth runner up in the 1978 Miss Georgia Universe pageant.Helena Christensen, born to a Danish father and Peruvian mother, won the Miss Denmark crown in 1986. That same year she went on to represent Denmark in the Miss Universe pageant.Before fighting off evil on 'Shadowhunters,' Toubia was slaying beauty pageants, even winning the title of Miss Brownsville Teen.Before 'Desperate Housewives,' Longoria was crowned Miss Corpus Christi in 1998. Lovato may be a singer and actress now, but before her days as a star, she was in the 2000 Texas State Miniature Miss pageant.Gabriela Isler of Venezuela was voted Miss Universe 2013, she works as a talent on the Venevision TV Network in her native country.
