Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has two secret passions that he seems to love as much as he does movies: music and new talent. In an exclusive interview with The Latin Times, just before receiving the GEMS award from the Miami International Film Festival, Cuaron showed how knowledgable he is about current music trends and explained why his latest project, 'Disclaimer,' has such a powerful soundtrack.

The series' score is composed by Phinneas O'Connell, better known as PHINNEAS, artist, and collaborator of his sister Billie Eilish. Cuarón says that he likes "lots" of new music saying "I think we're living in a very interesting time for music, where, there is a diversity...it's a moment where sounds from other countries are integrating themselves into the American mainstream."

O'Connell, who is 27, was likely brought in because of his talent as well as his age. The Mexican director revealed that working with Phineas "benefits me because it injects me with the energy of the new generation." To supplement Phineas' youthful energy, is his 20-year-old daughter, singer, Tess Bu Cuarón, who also provided music for the series.

Cuarón has a long history of working with his family, collaborating with his brother Carlos on the screenplays for Cuarón's debut 'Sólo con tu pareja' and the Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna hit, 'Y tu mamá también.' He also collaborated with his son, Jonás, on the screenplay for the Oscar-winning Gravity' and executive produced Jonás' second film 'Desierto.'

However, when asked about the benefits of working with family, Cuarón was quick to say "It's not about working with them because they earned it or because they're my kids. I've worked with my brother because he's very talented and I've worked with my oldest son because he's very talented as well and I benefit from them."

Cuarón also expressed the importance of festivals like the Miami International Film Festival as well as GEMS, the additional festival to "present the 'jewels' of the fall season." The filmmaker added "I'm not the one supporting this festival. This festival is supporting cinema. And I'm very grateful for that."

'Disclaimer' stars Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett as an award-winning documentary journalist who learns that she is a character in a novel that supposedly reveals a deep secret she has tried to hide. The series also stars Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Leslie Manville.

All episodes of Cuarón's new series are available to watch on Apple TV+ now.
