Alfonso Cuarón made history Sunday night during the 86th Academy Awards becoming the first Latino director to win in the category. What does an Oscar winner do the following day? In Cuarón's case is, relax at the legendary Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, California and pose for Variety magazine. The Oscar winner for Best Director and Best Film Editing for "Gravity" graces the cover of the trade publication poolside, having a healthy breakfast and his new pal Oscar by his side. The director is still wearing his suit from the night before with an untucked shirt and a wrinkled tie. The magazine hits newsstands this week.
"Wow, thank you. Thanks to the Academy. Like any other human endeavor, making a film can be a transformative experience, and I want to thank Gravity because for many of us involved in this film, it was definitely a transformative experience," Cuarón said during his Oscar acceptance speech. "I want to share this with all these wise people who made this movie happen: my amazing son and co-writer Jonás Cuarón. Sandra Bullock. Sandy, you’re Gravity. You are the soul, the heart of the film. You’re the most amazing collaborator and one of the best people I ever met."
Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto, was proud of the winners and send out his felicitations on Twitter. "Congratulations to Lupita Nyong'o, Mexican by birth, for her interpretative strength that have made her an Oscar winner," he wrote after the actress won in her category up against last year's winner Jennifer Lawrence. As the ceremony progressed more winners were revealed and this time, the President congratulated Lubezki for "the photographic language in 'Gravity,' as it is a great contribution for the universal cinema." He later added, "The Oscar for Best Director to Alfonso Cuarón is the result of his talent, effort and vision. Extraordinary job! Congratulations! The Oscar for Best Director for 'Gravity' is the result of the Cuaron's lifelong in movies." Peña Nieto concluded by writing, "Congratulations to the Mexicans that have won today at the Oscars; you are part of a distinguished generation of Mexican filmmakers."
