Alexey Sorokin, the World Cup Chief in Russia defended the country's anti-gay laws and said being gay is a way of life similar to being a Nazi. Sorokin was being interviewed by World Football Insider. Sorokin made the remarks after he was asked by a reporter about the strict anti-gay rules placed on the upcoming 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and the 2018 World Cup.

"The Olympics and World Cup are not a stage for various views...not for Nazis, not for any other way of life," Sorokin told the publication. That was not the only controversial remark Sorokin made about people who are gay.

Sorokin attempted to make it seem as though the anti-gay rules for the Olympics were not directly attacking homosexual people. Sorokin said the rules were put in place to keep people from promoting gay "propaganda" during the Olympic events. Sorokin said,

"Unless someone plans to be actively involved in the propaganda of this, they have nothing more to fear. They have guarantees and that they will not be affected. The minister of sport [Vitaly Mutko] has given a full and detailed explanation."

Sorokin also added, "We suppose people come to participate or to watch and be part of it not to display their views. Private life should remain private."

At the beginning of the interview Sorokin made another unusual comment when he referred to the possibility there would be naked people running wild at the World Cup.

"Would you like a World Cup where naked people are running around displaying their homosexuality? The answer to that is quite obvious."

The legislation against gay people at the Olympics and World Cup has been harshly condemned by President Obama as well as other nations like the United Kingdom and Germany. Russian officials have said athletes from other countries competing in the games will not be affected by this law. Officials from both the Olympic committee and the World Cup have asked the Russian government to clarify this statement in the months leading to the Olympics.
