It is one of the great mysteries of antiquity, where is the tomb of Alexander the Great? The warrior king ruled a vast empire during the fourth century BCE. The tomb of Alexander the Great was thought to be lost to history after mention of the gravesite disappeared from ancient texts. Now archeologists working in Ancient Amphipolis, 370 miles from Athens believe they may have discovered the tomb of the ancient king. The archeologists working in Amphipolis believe they have found an ancient grave of a royal individual after uncovering a marble wall.
The wall the team found dates back to the time of Alexander. It is described as an impressive structure measuring 500 meters long and three meters high. If the grave does not belong to Alexander the archeologists are still excited over the possibility they have found an ancient royal grave. The Daily Mail reports archeologist Aikaterini Peristeri as saying he is hopeful the grave contains "a significant individual or individuals within." The news of the discovery has captured the attention of the Greek nation. The Cultural Ministry in Greece cautions people not to be too "overbold" in linking Alexander to the site.
"The finding of Amphipolis is certainly very important," the Cultural Ministry is reported to have said. "But before the excavation proceeds, any interpretation and mainly identification with historical figures is too risky." Alexander's empire was vast, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas. Alexander died young, at the age of 32 in Babylon. In 331 BC Alexander founded a city at the mouth of the Nile River, Alexandria. After his death Alexander was buried in Alexandria and for 600 years his tomb was a flocking point for pilgrims. When the fourth century AD began The Tomb of Alexander the Great vanished from sight and all written texts.
