It’s been a busy year (to say the least) for Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu, who doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. For his next endeavor, the Mexican director will be collaborating and contributing to filmmaker Tom Shoval’s upcoming film, which will be inspired in Luis Buñuel’s “Viridiana.” “My next project will be a sort of ‘remake’ of ‘Viridiana’ which I’ve contextualized in contemporary Israel,” explained Shoval. “The main theme and basic elements were motivated by that film, which is one of my favorites of all time,” he continued.
The film will be a result of Rolex’s program ‘Mentors & Protégés’ where Iñárritu mentored Shoval for a year. “One of the things I admire about Alejandro Iñárritu is his ability to do this, and I hope that my year as a protégé will give me some opportunities to see how he works,” said Shoval about his mentor at the start of the program. During this year of mentorship, Shoval reportedly paid a few visits to Iñárritu on the set of his upcoming movie “The Revenant.”
The Israeli filmmaker says Iñárritu has been “there for him” contributing ideas and reading the script. “He’s really moved by the idea of talking about social classism struggles and the goodness in people’s heart like in ‘Viridiana,’” said Shoval. “It’s been amazing to see how he has time in his mind for my movie too, not just for his.” Shoval, who was nominated for an Academy Award this year, for co-writing the documentary “Aya,” plans to start shooting his new movie next year.
